Introduction

Turning your basement into a bar or building a bar top in general is an easy process. We offer step by step instructions on building a bar top and adding epoxy to it in order to obtain a look like the picture above. You can also try different and unique designs in order to give you epoxy the appeal you want. You can also add in logos.

Buildings Your BarTop

You will need the following items:

  •  epoxy penny countertopBottom layer of 3/4 inch rough plywood substrate
  • Wood of your choice (the wood doesn’t have to look good if you decide to add epoxy)
  • Varnish or paint
  • Sealant
  • Wood glue
  • Optional: Laminate or wood strips
    1. You will need to take your measurements and cut your plywood. The optimal height of a bar top is 46". However, you will need to take into account the height of your bar stools. After that you will need to cut your wood to fit onto the plywood.
    2. Now you can either glue or nail (with ¾ inch nails) the wood to the plywood.
    3. Now you can pre-drill and vanrish your countertop then seal it or you can add epoxy. Adding epoxy will give you a bar top that will stand out from your run of the mill bar top.

Epoxy Process

Preparation

    epoxy processThis will take about 4-6 hours your first time, longer if you have issues.
  1. Clean the surface and make sure all windows are closed the air conditioner is not blowing.
  2. You will need to take measurements of how much epoxy you might use.
  3. Lay down something over the floor as to catch any dripping epoxy and tape any edges you don’t want epoxy on.

Epoxy Penny Counter Top

  1. epoxy penny bartopWe suggest that you use a dark color for the background of your penny counter top.
  2. Now you will  to measure the amount of epoxy you will need. Add about 10 oz of mixed resin and hardener per sqft. assuming 1/8 of an inch. Call if you need assistance in measuring. Click here to look at our kits
  3. Create an edge, you can use anything from wood to duck tape but it needs to be water tight. You can also spray polyurthane to have the pennies stick and not use an edge since our epoxy is thick. The safest method is to do both.
  4. Lay out your pennies and remeber that you can make designs using light and dark colored pennies.
  5. Use Metal shears to trim the pennies for the edges  but your metal shears will probably be destroyed after
  6. Now just mixing your epoxy, lay it and torch it. See our full instruction video for the full process
